L'Alpina Maglierie Sportive S.p.A. was founded by Leardo Gabrielli in 1946. His founder’s aim was to enter in a revolutionary way into the knitwear market with innovative fabrics and excellent "technical" yarns. L’Alpina soon understood the great possibility that the fast growing sportswear market offered and created a new line of knitwear for ski that made L’Alpina become FISI sponsor in 1971.
Thanks to the success of these new products, Mr. Gabrielli together with his wife Mrs. Lina Gabrielli, decided to increase his engagement in the sport world by concentrating on Tennis, a discipline that more than others requires imagination, quality and style. The key factors of L’Alpina.
At the beginning of the sixties Australian, a new brand, was created, that testified a clear and punctual commitment of the company towards this sport with that certification of quality, that L’Alpina, thanks to its long tradition, could guarantee.
In the second half of the seventies, Giordano Maioli, Italian tennis champion in the sixties, captain of Davis Cup and together with Pietrangeli and Panatta prestigious person in the tennis world, took over the direction of the company and made Australian a status symbol in the tennis world.
